This Year’s Finalists Presented at the Czech Grand Design 2015 Awards Exhibition

The short-listed finalists for the Czech Grand Design 2015 Awards were presented at the Czech Grand Design 2015 Awards: The Finals exhibition opening at the National Technical Museum on Tuesday, February 23. The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in the Estates Theatre on March 19, 2016. As in previous years, the gala evening will be broadcast live by Czech Television.

The trios of finalists in each category were presented at the exhibition by members of the Academy of Czech Design of the Czech Republic who chose the best products and projects in the field of art and design. Designed by architect Jan Rosický, the Czech Grand Design 2015 Awards: The Finals exhibition focuses on non-traditional installations, presenting not only the short-listed object, model or photograph but also the designer’s story, graphic designs or creative process. The varied display of short-listed products combines audio-visual elements with traditional displays and individualised notice boards. The exhibition runs at the National Technical Museum until May 1, 2016.

The Czech Grand Design Awards visual is, traditionally, the result of collaboration between two winners from the previous year. Last year, the Grand Designer of the Year Award went to Michaela Tomišková and Jakub Janďourek from DECHEM studio. They are depicted with a stylised trophy for the winners – in the form of perfume contained in a special glass vial – in a photo taken by Adam Holý, winner of the Photographer of the Year Award last year. This tenth trophy in the history of the Czech Grand Design Awards is not only visually impressive but also delivers a unique olfactory experience. Michaela Tomišková and Jakub Janďourek explain: “Our sense of smell was the first human sense to evolve. Being able to smell scents leads us to remote and inaccessible parts of the brain. Concocted exclusively for the winners of the Czech Grand Design Awards, this essence includes ancient ingredients and a drop from the tuberose – a fragrant night-blooming plant.”
