Karya Anliak Terrabacteria – A Design for Post-Industrial Landscapes

What remains after raw material extraction? Post-industrial landscapes are commonly associated with devastation, contamination, and loss. Terrabacteria sees these sites not as passive, but as active, cared-for, and transformative. The design enables biomineralization through a height-adjustable rotating steel system, 3D-printed ceramic vessels, and a liquid culture of S. pasteurii, a local soil bacterium producing calcium carbonate minerals at the cell–environment interface. The system guides bacterial solution across post-industrial ground, generating a biomineralized formation. Remaining metabolically active and calcifying throughout the exhibition, it proposes an alternative approach to industrial design, where biomineralization and bacterial construction become methods of design.
