Hurvínek turns one hundred. Carved by Gustav Nosek for Josef Skupa in 1926, the puppet has delighted generations of audiences at home and abroad. To mark the anniversary, the Spejbl and Hurvínek Theatre invited designer Tereza Talichová and her studio Tititi to create a jubilee figure. The result is a hand-turned, hand-painted Hurvínek in beech wood that draws on Nosek’s original form while playfully bringing it into the present. Following two pieces made for the theatre, a limited series of ten figures is being created, none of them a copy of another. The exhibition presents Hurvínek as an icon of Czech design that still inspires contemporary makers a century on, and the theatre as a visual arts phenomenon where tradition meets a new visual identity.
