Birds as Partners in Circular City Care turns urban waterbirds into unexpected partners in cleaning the city’s waterways. In early spring, we distribute sustainably designed floating platforms, offering safe resting and breeding spots for waterbirds, something that is often missing in urban waterscapes. Whenever the locally widespread Eurasian coots take residency on these platforms, they demonstrate adaptive behavior to urban environments: alongside organic material, they collect human litter from the canals to build their nests. When the breeding season is over and the birds have left, we collect and recycle this litter. The project treats the coots’ adaptive behavior as an opportunity for interspecies waste recovery, fostering conversation around care for our more-than-human environment.
