Maalström.studio

Lubomír Kuča is a Prague-based woodturner working under the name Maalström.studio. Originally trained as a social pedagogue, he discovered woodturning almost by accident – inspired by his great-grandfather’s violin workshop, that still stands at the family cottage. A two-week experiment with a felled pear tree turned into a lasting passion. He works exclusively with salvaged, locally sourced wood – trees cut down due to storm damage or disease – and is drawn to turning green wood, embracing the cracks and warps that emerge as it dries. His pieces blend traditional woodturning with contemporary touches like spray paint and stencil work, echoing his background in street art.
