An interactive workshop based on the book ABCZ or H for Havel, exploring more than just Czech cultural identity. First, participants will choose their own letter and words they associate with the Czech Republic. They will then weave these into a story and illustrate it. Participants will thus be inspired to engage in their own literary and artistic creation. Everyone will leave with a piece of the puzzle—their own alphabet page—and perhaps an answer to the question: can one’s relationship to their homeland be described through alphabet entries? Would we choose the same ones, or does everyone carry their own in their heart?
About the instructor
After six years of living in Belgium with her family, Denisa Šedivá published the illustrated Czech alphabet book ABCZ or H for Havel, capturing the complex puzzle of Czech cultural identity. She collaborated with graphic designers Adam Macháček and Sébastien Bohner. The book took four years to create and was awarded the Most Beautiful Czech Textbook of 2018. In the spring of 2023, she released an ABCZ memory game to accompany the book. This workshop is inspired by her work.
The workshop will take place at the Trade Fair Palace (Veletržní palác) in the Atlas space.
