Michal Strach perceives design as “a tool that cultivates matter”

Michal Strach perceives design as “a tool that cultivates matter”. To him, it is in fact something like composing music,
and he hopes he would compose a good piece. Upon graduating from the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, he became the winner of the Designblok Diploma Selection, which determined his future professional course.

His installation for Manifest pursues his fascination by the enormous variety of forms and materials and the diversity of objects available on the market. “It makes me lose concentration and forces me to ponder the possibilities through which fusing particular non-homogeneous elements can influence the final form. I am interested in recycling the form of an object (a process I call “pure vandalism”). I collect my materials in thrift stores, hobby shops and workshops, shops selling building material... The combinations of the individual ‘raw materials’ result in simple compositions that seemingly contain the archetypes of the things we know. I will present an object demonstrating the power of individual objects

in their newly acquired form – of a central solitaire object, an abstracted torso of a city.”

If he was not a designer, he would be a gardener. “It simply makes me feel serene when I look at a final work that lives, flourishes and prospers.”
