In collaboration with EUNIC Cluster Czech Republic, Designblok will present the third year of the Designblok Diploma Selection, an international competition showcasing the work of the most talented European graduate students. The contestants will include 24 product designers and 13 fashion designers. The winners will be awarded EUR 1,000 plus an individual presentation at Designblok next year. 17 designers from the Czech Republic will take part in the competition.
This year, Designblok Diploma Selection finalists come from 13 European countries, including Netherlands, Spain, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Italy, Wallonia-Brussels and Lithuania. Israel will take part as a guest country from outside the European Union. The finalists will include fashion designer Danial Aitouganov who won the Lichting competition for the best Dutch graduate students in fashion design.
“This year, there were over 200 applicants. The finalists include 17 designers from the Czech Republic. Their number confirms the exceptional quality of Czech art colleges and academies all across the Czech Republic,” Jiří Macek, Creative Director of Designblok, explains.
Jana Zielinski, Director of Designblok, adds: “I am looking forward to seeing presentations by last year’s winners – Jorge Penadés, Janina Volkmer and Michal Strach. It is always interesting to see what the winners, selected by the respected jury led by Rossana Orlandi and Lina Kanafani, have achieved. Spanish designer Jorge Penadés has exhibited his work in the most prestigious European galleries, which is a huge achievement. At Designblok, he will present his latest collection in its world premiere,”. Plus, Michal Strach, who graduated from the AAAD in Prague last year, will present his dreamlike collection of toys made from soap in its world premiere.
The product design exhibition will be displayed in the Designblok Openstudio in the Industrial Palace at Výstaviště (Prague Holešovice). Fashion design finalists will present their work at a special circular Garden Stage, which will be part of the central hall, on Saturday October 29th. The winners in the two categories will be chosen by an international jury consisting of prominent European gallerists, curators, journalists and design theorists. The new members include Juliet Kinchin, curator of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York.
