Eco-design studio Balance is Motion presents its innovative modular system Ruderal

28. 9. 2023

Balance is Motion, a Czech eco-design studio, presents its innovative modular system Ruderal at Designblok 2023, showing that aesthetics and sustainability can go hand in hand

In their fight against greenwashing, the award-winning studio launches a versatile modular system for creating different types of furnishings, inspired by lichens. Ruderal is headed to Prague's Designblok after a successful debut at New York's Wanted Design, where it represented the Czech Republic as a multifunctional product that embodies sustainable minimalism. Ruderal’s individual parts allow for easy assembly, reconfiguration, maintenance and recycling, and can thus serve a variety of functions - anything from a whiteboard stand to an outdoor bench.

The product’s modularity, one of the pillars of eco-design, allows not only iterative customisation, but also easy repairs and an overall extension of the product's lifetime. The principle of co-design is also central: the users decide on the product’s final form and become a part of the design process. Ruderal thus allows its users to engage their own creativity and transform the product according to their ever-changing needs.

Ruderal's playful aesthetic aims to enliven places and events that suffer from a lack of functional, quality design. In this way, Ruderal pays tribute to resilient lichens, as its practicality and easy maintenance make it fitting for a variety of settings - from retail and office spaces, to public spaces and more.

The versatility of the modular system is also supported by its material variants. At Designblok, visitors can experience Ruderal molded from recycled concrete for the first time, developed in cooperation with Cementum. The futuristic look of the modules, with their thin walls and surprising angles, pushes the boundaries of what was thought possible with the material. Also on display will be 3D printed modules made from 100% recycled PETG filament, developed in collaboration with PrusaLab, in Josef Prusa's prototyping workshop. This version of the modules also encapsulates NFC tags, which will give visitors access to the digital passport of each module. Thanks to Entity Systems, a company that focuses on the development of digital passports and warehouse management products, visitors will learn more about the modules and materials, but also their environmental footprint calculated through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. Balance is Motion Studio is thus transforming the face of sustainability with a product that is truly thought through to the last detail.

As an eco-design studio, Balance is Motion has been combining design creativity with an analytical approach to environmental issues since 2021. The studio addresses design and sustainability challenges of its B2B clients, especially in product and event design. Balance is Motion has been awarded the Veolia Sustainability Award at Designblok 2021 and went on to win the RO Plastic Prize 2022 with its seating collection, Foamy.

Designblok visitors can test their own creativity and become co-designers of the Ruderal modular system, as part of the installation at the Trade Fair Palace (M.05 - mezzanine). Learn more in the Exhibitors Catalog and on balanceismotion.cz.
